multi-tasking mom questioned: The fire was confined to one bedroom. Unfortunately, the smoke hurt went through nearly the entire home – 3,000 square feet. Is there a way to clean the walls and ceiling without replacing all the drywall? The stone fireplace is also covered in a layer of smoke. Any suggestions on how to deal with this mess would be appreciated. I prefer to save the cost of doing it myself, instead of calling the “professionals”.

netnewbie questioned: I have a gas fireplace (Heat-N-Glo) in master bedroom. This fireplace has a switch on the wall just like a regular switch for any house lights. The pilot seems a lot larger than the one seen in gas stove.
I am just wondering if it is needed to turn the pilot light off in the summer. If it is excellent to do, who can do it? If I can do it, how?
Thanks!
Claudia

gobern26 questioned: We found the perfect home in Buford, GA -but it does not have the wood-burning fireplace that I’ve always wanted. Gas, electric will not do. We figured we knock a hole in it and install a wood-burner. Feasible? If so, how much should I budget for it? Who should I get to do the work for me, what kind of professional?

geistswoman questioned: The home I bought had a woodburning fireplace that the previous owners converted to a pellet stove. I’d rather have a woodburning fireplace. Can I just remove the stove and go back to using the chimney or do I need a professional to do the conversion?

Your honor, your Honor questioned: I have received an ancient hand hewn barn beam of white oak I want to attach to studded drywall above a gas fireplace. The beam is 10″ x 6″ x 6′ and weighs in excess of 135lbs.What would be a excellent way to anchor this to the wall with preferrably nothing showing? The weight, obviously concerns me. I plot on using a stone veneer around the mantel once it is installed.

Tara G questioned: I want to use the fireplace to help heat my small home so I don’t have to run the furnace as much throughout the winter months. I have read that a fireplace is not an efficent source of heat. Can anything make it more efficent?
