windyy questioned:
I am going to replace a prefab fireplace box. I need to remove the marble that surrounds the existing one. I was plotting on using
piano wire to cut the adhesive holding the marble to the fireplace box.
Is there a better way?
I stuck my pocket knife behind the marble into the adhesive. It felt
like it was still pliable. It appears
that whoever installed it used the
least amount of adhesive they could.

If you are wanting to try to ’save’ the marble for reuse, use the piano wire. Otherwise, get the pry bar out.
Hi windy,
When I have installed stone around fireplaces I set it to stay. You might get it off the way you propose, but if it was set with the materials I normally use you’ll need to break it into chunks and scrape off the ancient adhesive. Don’t hit too hard, you don’t want to hurt the drywall, just pulverize the stone. If the drywall was painted before the stone adhered, you should be able to lightly cut around the adhesive and peel it off. If it is completely on the metal, a 4″ razor scraper might get off the leftover material, but if it is EPOXY, better sharpen up a excellent chisel.
