If the valve operator is parallel to the gas line, the valve is open. If the valve operator is across the gas line, the valve is closed.
You do not say what kind of gas, but it is likely natural gas. Without being there I can't go much further. Does it have a pilot light or do you just light the burner? Electrically operated gas valve? Need more information before saying more. Any gas appliance can be dangerous if one can't tell exactly how it operates and I can't intelligently troubleshoot without complete details. The same function can be performed in different ways. Safety First.

If it is Propane, perhaps your tank is empty?

Was gas still flowing after the flame went out?

My fireplace has a low oxygen sensor. This too will stop the gas, and the flame if it is triggered.

If your fireplace has more than just a blower powered by the light switch you mentioned, perhaps a voltage sag triggered a fail safe shut down - again the gas flow would be stopped in this instance.
