How do you repair the fire box of an fireplace?

I had the inside of the fireplace repaired because it had a couple of cracks. But now I need to fix the area where you place the wood. I was told to use sheet metal to line the fire box any other sugestions?

all that i can reckon of that would be incorrect is terrible mortar joints , right? then you need to grind them out and repoint them…if this isnt the problem then please elaborate
