How do you clean the black soot from a gas fireplace?

Becca questioned:

It is everywhere the walls, floor, pictures, knick-knacks. I’ve never had a gas fireplace and we cleaned the chimney but now we are getting soot everywhere. Our chimney only has 2 settings the first notch or fully open. We have it on the first notch. Is this incorrect? Is there a specific way to arrange the logs? I have heard that there is. I have tried pine-sol, fantastic, and plain ancient soap and water with some elbow grease, none of these have worked.

Krud Kutter will remove it. I had a chimney fire last year and had black soot all over everything and it was the only product I could find that took it off of every surface, including the limestone around my fireplace. I found it in the cleaning aisle at Lowes and used it straight. I like it because it is biodegradeable, odorless and can be diluted to clean nearly anything.

I have a gas fireplace that burns real wood and we keep ours open all of the way. I’m surprised your chimney sweep didn’t remove all of the soot, that is how I learned Krud Kutter because that is what he used to clean the inside and outside of the fireplace and the glass doors.

Most of my neighbors who have the same fireplace as I do choose to use the artifical logs. I notice they have them stacked so that there are air gaps between them which is similar to how we stack our real ones. But, I reckon you still get some soot no matter how they are stacked.

OK. The problem is with the logs. It could be a combination of how they are set up and not having your damper fully open when you burn them. There should be a metal tag attached to the logs somewhere. look behind and underneath. get all of the information off of that tag and I can send you a diagram how they should be set up.

By saying that the damper has to be open i’m assuming that they are “vented” logs. If they are “ventless” logs it doesn’t matter if the damper is open, but they still have to be set up correctly. I will be able to tell with your model number. Excellent luck cleaning up!
