How do I prep bricks on fireplace opening for additional bricks?

fireplace
Karen G questioned:

The fireplace opening is 2″ too wide for the new doors I got for free. I bought bricks to add to the inside of each side. I did some reading, and know I need to soak the new and ancient bricks with water for a couple days so the mortar will adhere. What should I use to clean the ancient bricks first?

the mortar will adhere…you dont reckon they let us soak them at work before we lay them , do you…you can hit the sides of the ancient bricks with a wet brush but everything will stick the way its supposed to…
