We went into my house a small over a year ago (without a home inspection) and we have never used my fireplace. Do we need to have it professionally inspected or should it be safe to use?

Call a chimney sweep, have it serviced and the flue inspected…call the name in the yellow pages with the smallest add.( or no add)
Very inexpensive and well worth it for you and your homes safety.
burn some paper in the fire place see smoke go us up chimney OK if not have it swept out
Have it professionally inspected. We were in the same situation when we bought our house. The chimney sweep said the chimney was in fantastic shape, the fireplace was clean as a whistle, and to never light a fire in it until we had some work done.
The reason was, he said, that the grate and doors in the front were probably a cheap set of doors from a department store, and the air vents in them did NOT match the location of the air intakes of the firebox behind it. That meant that the firebox in the fireplace would overheat because it wasn’t properly ventilated, possibly causing a fire.
So if you want to use the fireplace, have it inspected by someone that knows what they are doing. It might cost you a hundred or two. That’s cheap insurance, compared to the cost of rebuilding the house or repairing a lot of fire hurt.
Or losing a life.
I personally would have the chimney inspected by a professional. Talk to people around you and see if you can get a referral or call your local BBB. You have too much to loose if it is not in proper working order. If it’s fine, then you have piece of mind that it is fine! It is alway better to be safe than sorry.
HAVE IT INSPECTED, ASAP. The average person can not tell it there are perilous levels of coreisode built up in the flume. Only someone trained as a chimney inspector can. If your levels are high, your chimney can catch fire and you won’t know it till it’s too late. Your local chimney sweeps usually have someone trained to do inspections. Plus update or install Carbon Monoxide detectors. The money you pay for the inspection and cleaning plus the detectors will be MORE THAN WORTH IT!
