gurlndixie questioned:
My house has a fireplace which is approximately 13 years ancient. (the house is 13 years ancient). Anyway, when I build a fire in the fireplace there is smoke in the house. What could be incorrect with it? Could it be clogged up or something. It is a Marco Fireplace. Thanks
How do I know if my chimney is clogged? And what do I do about it if it is? thanks

Are you positive the flue is completely open? Get a flashlight and look up the chimney. There is a gate called a flue that can be closed when not using the fireplace. Other than that, it could be carbon or soot deposit slowing the flow, or even nests or dead animals clogging it up higher.
The flue should be about 10% the size of the opening of the fireplace if your fireplace is made of bricks or clean the flue.
if your damper is open and your chimney is not clogged then light a piece of newspaper to start the draft up the chimney. if the outside temperature is 50 or above you may not be able to get it to draft. the colder the outside temperature, the simpler it is to get the draft going. also if it is windy outside you may be getting whats called a downdraft. keep trying. sorry but there is a technique to starting a fire and keeping it going. excellent luck.
Hi, you may have a build up of creosote in the chimney. Here is a website I found to help me, excellent luck!
