What is the cost difference of using a gas fireplace vs. gas heat?

Sunday, January 10th, 2010
Dave G questioned:

We have natural gas for heat, as well as the fireplace. I want to use the fireplace more, but I suspect that using a fireplace much in a month would run up our bill moreso than sticking with the normal house’s gas heat.

Anyone know if that’s right? Is there a rough amount that it would cost extra? 20-30% higher maybe?

How can I get the flames in my electric fireplace to work again?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
chrys_folly questioned:

My electric fireplace gives off heat, the fan works but the flames won’t flicker and go anymore. They just look like they are frozen in time. Any thoughts on how to get them moving?

Crystal M questioned:

I have 2 thermostats in my home and one works and warms our house. The other is right next to our fireplace (which I am assuming is electric) and does nothing when I turn it on. What is the problem?

How does the gas consumption from my gas fireplace compare?

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
***~*** questioned:

with using my regular heat? My regular heat is also gas, forced hot water. I like the fireplace b/c it heats up much more quickly but does it burn a lot more gas? I can’t afford surprises this year!

How do I clean smoke-damaged walls and a stone fireplace damaged in a house fire. What about the odor?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
multi-tasking mom questioned:

The fire was confined to one bedroom. Unfortunately, the smoke hurt went through nearly the entire home – 3,000 square feet. Is there a way to clean the walls and ceiling without replacing all the drywall? The stone fireplace is also covered in a layer of smoke. Any suggestions on how to deal with this mess would be appreciated. I prefer to save the cost of doing it myself, instead of calling the “professionals”.

Do I need to turn off the pilot light off in a gas-fireplace in Summer?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
netnewbie questioned:

I have a gas fireplace (Heat-N-Glo) in master bedroom. This fireplace has a switch on the wall just like a regular switch for any house lights. The pilot seems a lot larger than the one seen in gas stove.

I am just wondering if it is needed to turn the pilot light off in the summer. If it is excellent to do, who can do it? If I can do it, how?

Thanks!

Heat is flowing out of our fireplace front and up the roomside wall of the chimney. Normal or a problem?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
oohhbother questioned:

Our woodburning fireplace has no doors or mantle. This year, the front of the chimney above the firebox becomes very hot. The heat ends at the picture hanging 3 feet above, and the bricks behind that picture are cool. The heat stops at that line. The co2 alarm, which is in the hallway and not near the fireplace, does not register anything. No smoke is getting in the room.

I don’t remember this happening in past years.

I have two gas fireplaces and it’s very hard to light the pilot light every Winter when I want to use the fireplaces. I’m thinking of just leaving the pilot light on all year but concerned about the cost.

Approximately how much does it cost to burn a pilot light in a gas fireplace each month?
