Originally a wood burning fireplace, was converted to natural gas about 7 years ago. All original fireplace still there including damper, chimney flue, and intake vents. My thought was to go back about 8 to 10 feet and cap the gas line, then remove gas line, burner and fake logs in fireplace. Lastly get a pro (plummer?) to inspect before I light a fire. Safe for a medium skill level handyman to do?

I have received an ancient hand hewn barn beam of white oak I want to attach to studded drywall above a gas fireplace. The beam is 10″ x 6″ x 6′ and weighs in excess of 135lbs.What would be a excellent way to anchor this to the wall with preferrably nothing showing? The weight, obviously concerns me. I plot on using a stone veneer around the mantel once it is installed.

Recently we started to remodel our den. We’ve demolished a closet, and inserted can lighting, now we want to work on the floor and that entails removing the carpet and putting down hard wood flooring. The base boards go behind the fireplace’s bricks… & I already started to remove the baseboards from the entire room. Is there a way to remove the baseboards without having to demo the brick?

I am working on building a fireplace mantel. I took out the ancient cedar that surrounded the bricks. I was using the instructions on the DIY website but can’t see the pictures that well and the instructions aren’t that detailed. The demensions are 67.5″ wide by 44″ tall for the bricks. the brick platform in front of the fireplace is same width as the fireplace with no extra brick on the side. My question is what is the simplest way to do a decent mantel? anywhere I should look that I haven’t tried yet?

We have a fireplace that has a gas line running from the wall. We don’t have a pilot light but can smell the gas when we turn the knob connected to an adjacent wall. There are real logs in the fireplace and it is obvious that matches light the logs but we need some information as to how to do this safely. Please help! Thanks in advance.

We recently bought a home and it had a stove in the fireplace. We didn’t want the stove so we removed it. The problem is that it doesn’t look like there is a damper in the fireplace. I heard the cheapest way to install a new one is to use a lock top damper. Any thoughts? Also, need to get rid of the stove. It’s in decent shape. Any thoughts on how to get rid of it?- it’s extremely heavy. Thanks!

The fireplace opening is 2″ too wide for the new doors I got for free. I bought bricks to add to the inside of each side. I did some reading, and know I need to soak the new and ancient bricks with water for a couple days so the mortar will adhere. What should I use to clean the ancient bricks first?

I am going to be making a fireplace surround and hearth using ceramic tile. Its a zero clearance wood burning fireplace. The walls where the surround will go is sheetrock and the hearth is wood-framed and raised off the floor 12″. I have a pretty excellent thought how to start, but I am curious if anyone has any tips that I should know about. Maybe you have done this yourself? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
