How do I convert my pellet stove back to a wood burning fireplace?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
geistswoman questioned:

The home I bought had a woodburning fireplace that the previous owners converted to a pellet stove. I’d rather have a woodburning fireplace. Can I just remove the stove and go back to using the chimney or do I need a professional to do the conversion?

How to install a heavyweight barn beam as a fireplace mantel?

Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Your honor, your Honor questioned:

I have received an ancient hand hewn barn beam of white oak I want to attach to studded drywall above a gas fireplace. The beam is 10″ x 6″ x 6′ and weighs in excess of 135lbs.What would be a excellent way to anchor this to the wall with preferrably nothing showing? The weight, obviously concerns me. I plot on using a stone veneer around the mantel once it is installed.

How do I renovate my center fireplace?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009
Tina V questioned:

When you walk through the front entrance door, the back of my fireplace is what you see. As you walk though (and around the fireplace), you go into my main area, the living room. I am completely renovating my house and believe that since this is the center of my house, I should remodel it first. Built in the 80’s, it’s all brick until you hit the cellings. I want to update it but not sure how. Do I knock down all the brick or build and add plywood and tile to the outside? Just really, really needing some help…. Thank you!

What is the best way to give a fireplace a quick face lift?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009
nyc_princess questioned:

My fireplace is brick – red and black. I have always despised it and want to change it. I have considered painting it but not sure whether or not I can use regular paint. I have also considered refacing it with stone/marble but it seems quite complicated. Any advice on do-it-yourself fix-ups or even someone in the NYC area that is reasonable?
They are real bricks and I own my house.
