We have a fireplace with a dark oak mantel would you paint it? Would it hurt the value of the home?

Monday, October 26th, 2009
GutsiePerson questioned:

The room is very small and the fireplace makes it kind of dark. The crown molding matches the mantel and is also dark oak. Would you paint it white to lighten up the room or would that hurt the value of the house? Would really like to hear from people in the field who know about values of homes.

Does anyone know the average cost to rebuild a fireplace?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009
zurc137 questioned:

The house is 158 years ancient built like a tank but some things were negelected (fireplace) they even went so far as once having a hole (poor patch job now) for a flue from a stove going through the overmantle (idiots). So if you are going to use a scale for pricing, lean on the higher end.

Do you know how to stain a cast stone fireplace?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Joel B questioned:

Im a pretty handy do it your self home owner who is not worried to tackle much. But staining my fireplace is something that I can’t undo if i ***** it up.

I have a white cast stone fireplace surround that we want to stain with a dark redish/brown stain to give it a real rich Tuscan feel.

I know that Kemco makes concrete stains, but im not sure how to apply it to give that faux look which lits of texture and variations so that it really looks like an ancient aged fireplace.

Any thoughts?

What color should I paint my family room? Brick fireplace, hardwood floor, one north facing window?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Lucy E questioned:

Not much natural light comes into the room so I want to brighten it up a bit. What color would do that and match the fireplace and hardwood floor? The only color I can reckon of is white but I want to be a bit more adventurous than that!
Thanks!

What is the ring on the side of this fireplace for?

Thursday, October 1st, 2009
Miakoda questioned:

The fireplace in the apartment I am hoping to go to has a ring embedded in the side, inside the firebox. What is that ring for? It appears to be QUITE strong.
It’s not a knob, and it’s certainly not a shut off. It’s IN the fireplace, on the side of the place where the burning wood goes.
