How do I prep bricks on fireplace opening for additional bricks?

The fireplace opening is 2″ too wide for the new doors I got for free. I bought bricks to add to the inside of each side. I did some reading, and know I need to soak the new and ancient bricks with water for a couple days so the mortar will adhere. What should I use to clean the ancient bricks first?

How much does a fireplace actually heat your home, will it emit enough heat to keep surrounding area warm?

Hi! Just went into my first home, and it has a fireplace. We were wondering how much heat does a fireplace really give off in the winter and will it be enough to heat at least the surrounding room? Sorry if its a stupid question, weve never had a fireplace before though, thanks!
Nate, lol….I know it sounds like a stupid question, obviously I know it was made to place out heat and not for show, I was wondering how much heat it would place out, enough to heat the entire room and surrounding area or just immediate area
