How do you know if a house has a fireplace chimney vs just a chimney?

Bada Bada questioned:

I just started working as an exterior home inspector.

I’m having distress distinguishing between when a chimney has a fireplace below it and when it doesn’t.

Since chimneys don’t always have fireplaces below them, how can you tell for sure?

Thanks.
Asking an owner isn’t an option….since much of the time they aren’t home.

I have a gas fireplace that puts out little heat. Will a firebacker help?

I was told a firebacker would help radiate heat from the fireplace. Is there anything else that should be done? Are there different quality of firebackers? How will I know if one is excellent quality? Should it be made of cast iron’? Any more suggestions would also be appreciated. (The fireplace is vented with glass doors over the opening.
