How do you disconnect a gas fireplace and avoid a gas leak?

We want to insert tile around the fireplace and need to disconnect it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

How can I tell if my fireplace is safe to use?

We went into my house a small over a year ago (without a home inspection) and we have never used my fireplace. Do we need to have it professionally inspected or should it be safe to use?
